This paper examines the changes in India's defense industry since the end of the Cold War. The paper's objectives are four-fold: first, it examines critical aspects of India's defence-industrial policies in the past and considers the factors that have influenced the country's defense production; second, it examines the main trends during the 1990's and the major policy changes that occurred during this decade; third, it considers current policies; and fourth, it reflects on future problems and prospects for the country's defense industry.
