In an attempt to counter the growing influence of China in their region, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore have dramatically increased their defense spending. In pursuing ambitious military modernization programs, however, these countries may well be pushing Southeast Asia to the brink of a regional arms race. This prospect is not helpful, argues the following paper – particularly given the conflicting territorial claims that continue to simmer in the South China Sea.
