The author addresses Ma Ying-jeou's re-election as president of Taiwan in January 2012. The author contends that his tenure will be defined by a pragmatic foreign policy which endeavors both to quench Taiwan's thirst for international space and rebalance its relations with China. As cross-strait economic cooperation deepens, the EU should move forward with talks with Taiwan.
