This meeting note explores the transitions taking place across the Middle East and North Africa and how they can best be managed. The first section examines the changes taking place in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya, and Syria as the political landscape of the region is redefined. The second section then highlights comparative perspectives from democratic transitions in other parts of the world. Finally, the note looks at tools for addressing the challenges that transitions can raise, focusing in particular on multiparty negotiations and mediation.
