This paper presents the evolution of the Bundeswehr’s role in German foreign and security policy and the ongoing process of “constructing” a new military. The authors discuss the objectives of the military transformation and the change in the image and social identity of the German armed forces. They also analyse the implications of this new concept of the Bundeswehr for political and military cooperation within NATO and the EU.
