This paper presents the opportunities and the challenges linked to the introduction of a visa-free regime in EU-Eastern Europe relations. The author gives an outline of the visa liberalization process so far and an analysis of the strong and the weak points of the neighboring states, and assesses their level of readiness for the introduction of visa-free movement with the EU. In the last section, some recommendations are presented: how to steer the further negotiation process so that the ultimate goal can be achieved and will be beneficial for both the European Union and the governments and societies of Eastern European states.
