This paper examines what role international development cooperation policy will play in Spain after the 2011 national elections. The formation of a slimmer government appears to confirm the new Spanish Government’s commitment to austerity as the way out of the current financial and economic crisis, and suggests Europe as the centerpiece of its foreign policy. In front of this backdrop the question what role international development cooperation policy will play among these new priorities and what its main objectives will be is answered. The paper ends with recommendations on how to achieve a dual goal, namely to impact on development and to promote Spain’s global presence.
