In this paper, the author examines the current state of affairs with regard to Al-Qaida. Firstly, the origins and early development of Al-Qaida are discussed, followed by a summary of events that occurred through 2012. Three key incidents are examined, including the devastating Damascus bombs of May 2012. Finally, the author explains the wider context of Al-Qaida's activities and examines its role in the Syrian conflict.
