This policy brief tries to evaluate the societal value of basic and applied security research. It examines both the role of research in society and the impact which security research can have on society. It discusses the criteria through which the impact of security research can be assessed and the measures which can be taken to ensure that the impact is favourable. The Policy Brief ends with a checklist on societal impact.
