This publication analyzes the role that the game of football may play for peace and development in Africa. Beyond the skills and artistry displayed by professional stars on the big stage, football on the African continent has in the past played a major role in the struggles for national liberation, self-determination and democracy. Today, in post-colonial Africa, the game is used by the United Nations, international organizations and local NGOs as an important and effective vehicle to bridge ethnic or political divides, heal wounds and pave a way for unity, post-conflict reconstruction and socio-economic development.
