This analysis sums up the history of and the present and future plans for the Panama Canal. The author argues that the Panama Canal expansion project - its completion is envisaged for 2014 - is opening up essential opportunities in the political and economic arena. Spanish companies are at the forefront of this colossal project. From this position, the author argues, it is vital to fully develop the instruments for cooperation between Spain and Panama.
