This report looks at the enlargement of the European Union. After discussing the evolution of the European Union and describing the process of enlargement, the EU acceding countries and candidates are presented. The authors asses the prospects for future rounds of EU enlargement and outlines US perspectives on the issue. They envisage that as of 2014 five countries are recognized by the EU as official candidates for membership: Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey.
