This paper features two articles discussing the role of the Wider Black Sea Area (WBSA) in a future European security space, and the prospects for peace in the Middle East following the Israeli disengagement from Gaza. The first article provides a brief synthesis of the recommendations and observations of an NDC-sponsored June 2005 research seminar on the WBSA, during which the participants set out to analyze the current situation and the potential for future cooperation in the area. The second article summarizes a panel discussion held in October 2005 on the situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories after Israel's successful withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank.
