This bulletin argues that without some kind of compromise between the two largest political groups in the European Parliament (EP), it’s an open question how the 17 January 2017 EP presidential election will turn out. What’s certain is that a victory for the European People’s Party’s (EPP) candidate would 1) end the balance of power that currently exists, basically because EPP representatives would lead the EU’s three most important institutions, and 2) only the position of High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy would remain staffed by a candidate of the Progressive Alliance of European Socialists and Democrats.
