Adolescent pregnancy is dangerous – and sometimes fatal. In developing countries it is the leading cause of death for adolescent girls. Adolescent pregnancy is dangerous for babies too. This report looks at the causes contributing to and long-ranging effects of adolescent pregnancy. It also presents policy recommendations to address this issue. It stresses that helping girls see themselves as more than potential mothers - and helping communities to do the same - is key to reducing adolescent pregnancy. This entails addressing educational and cultural barriers that limit girls' options.
