This report provides an overview of the statutory mandate of the Federal Reserve (Fed), as well as its monetary policy instruments and responsibilities to adhere to its mandate. It outlines the four main categories of the Fed’s responsibilities as the nation’s central bank, focusing in particular on monetary policy and ensuring financial stability through the lender of last resort function, and provides further information on the Congressional debate on Fed oversight.
