This report provides an overview of the UK's pre-charge detention legislation for terrorist suspects. It examines Government counter-terrorism legislation, the Terrorism Act 2000 and its subsequential amendments in 2003 and 2006, which extended the period of detention to 28 days and introduced a series of new procedural protections for suspects. Moreover, it has been argued that the issue of a pre-charge detention returned to the fore in 2008 with the Counter-Terrorism Bill and in 2010 with the analysis of the Coalition Government's approach to extend the pre-charge detention. Finally, the author provides an statistical analysis of the relations between the pre-charge detention and the number of arrests.
