In order to gain a better understanding of the recent development in the Kashmir region, the author will discuss the evolution of the peace talks and the issue of security related to a succession of violent protests in the region. The author explores the Indian proposal to a sustained dialogue through the establishment of a high-level panel, highlighting the rising criticism against the conclusions and recommendations of the report of the panel. It has been argued that, according to the most important external actors in the region, namely UK and US, the resolution of the Kashmir dispute remains a potentially important element in building peace and security across the wider region.
