This commentary asserts that Al-Qaeda remains a serious threat to international security and that its losses will not destroy the organization in the foreseeable future. Al-Qaeda’s strength is based on its jihadist South and Central Asian allies and affiliates in the Middle East and Africa. All of these entities have the capacity to continue terrorist activities themselves and could play influential roles in the Afghan and Syrian conflicts, the authors warn.
