This note provides a strategic overview of the UK arms export control policy. It outlines the main changes to the arms export control policy that have been introduced since 1997, as well as the changes in both policy and practice resulting from the controversy surrounding UK arms exports to Middle Eastern and North African countries involved in the Arab Spring in 2011.
