South Sudan achieved independent statehood on 9 July 2011. Relief that the January referendum went smoothly has been replaced by worries about the destabilizing effect of 'unfinished business' such as the future of oil-rich Abyei and border demarcation. In addition, the ruling parties in both North and South are increasingly divided. Last but not least, peace talks on Darfur remain stalemated.
