Egypt’s remarkably peaceful and dignified popular revolt has been greeted as a historic moment that will have enormous consequences throughout the Arab world. This note describes the background to the crisis and provides a simple account of events since 25 January 2011. It profiles groups and individuals involved and considers some likely outcomes.
