This brief examines the challenges facing Egyptian civil-military relations following President Morsi's ouster of the first ranks of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). The author argues that the transition's key challenges continue to be how to avoid the politicization of the army and how to democratize civilian oversight. Any sustainable transition must seek a broad national consensus among all political forces on the management of the transitional process.
