Does military spending provide economic stimulation through higher demand and technological innovation, or does it retard economic performance by drawing resources away from more productive activities? This paper utilizes a half century's worth of data to demonstrate that neither viewpoint garners strong support. The author explains that the major effect of defense expenditure is context specific, with actual impacts also depending on other economic conditions.
