This book examines the contrasting forms of authoritarian rule in Russia and China, and considers whether authoritarianism in general is sustainable in a post-modern century. The idea of authoritarian modernization, or state capitalism, has become fashionable in the wake of the global financial crisis, argue the authors, but the examples of China and Russia demonstrate that it is ultimately a self-serving illusion.
