As the death toll in Syria rises and accusations of crimes against humanity mount against President Bashar al-Assad and his ruling Ba’ath Party, many are calling for an armed intervention to put an end to the Assad regime’s widespread human rights abuses. The author argues that finding the right way forward for Syria is proving elusive. He turns to philosophy and, in particular, to Just War theory for guidance. Principles like just cause and proportionality are used to assess whether an intervention in Syria would constitute a just war or not.
