In the midst of the sovereign debt crisis, Europe is unable to meet its strategic responsibilities not only around the globe but it is also struggling to do so even on its doorsteps, namely the Western Balkans. The authors argue that the role of the EU membership prospects was crucial in the transformation of individual Balkan states and societies. Without continuous EU involvement, the Western Balkans will remain what they are now — undeveloped, fragmented, and still a potential trouble spot.
