This paper researches the causes of the emergence of collective action based on popular developments of the so-called ‘Arab Spring’. The author compares Yemen and Algeria’s experiences as cases of collective action and status quo, respectively. She focuses on the period prior to the onset of collective action to examine its nature and dynamics in the light of the social movement theory.
