The ongoing militarization of Syrian refugees in southern Turkey, despite it being well-organized and large-scale, has been overlooked in most analyses of the Syrian conflict. Given this weakness, this brief cites previous instances of refugee militarization to help issue a clear warning – being unable to distinguish combatants from non-combatant refuges carries significant risks for everyone involved in the current fight.
