This Policy Brief analyzes the specific factors that are undermining Iran's leadership role in the Middle East. It argues that the Arab Spring, the conflict in Syria, NATO’s pending withdrawal from Afghanistan, renewed tensions over its nuclear program, and its ongoing proxy war with Israel have compromised Tehran's regional status. Indeed, because of the interplay of the above factors (and more), Iran could soon find itself regionally isolated to a degree that is unprecedented in its recent history. The isolation, in turn, could last for years.
