This paper analyzes police service strength in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It uses police service strength data from the Home Office, Scottish Government and Police Service of Northern Ireland. The paper states that there were approximately 220,500 full-time equivalent staff working in the police service at the end of March 2012 and that police officer numbers have fallen by over 5,000 compared with March 2011.
