Syrian opposition groups and the international community are developing plans for a future without President Bashar al-Assad. This publication argues, however, that such efforts need a serious "reality check." The Gulf States and Turkey all have real influence in the fight, but they also favor opposition groups with different religious affiliations and varying abilities to serve their own interests. These interests, in fact, do not necessarily coincide with European–Arab attempts at cooperation.
