In India's broader strategic frameworks, Australia remains on the periphery, according to this commentary published at the occasion of Julia Gillard's visit to India in October 2012. Hence, the author argues, it is no surprise that no Indian prime minister has visited Australia since Rajiv Gandhi in 1986. Part of Gillard's challenge is to persuade her Indian counterpart to visit Australia to work towards more political symmetry in Australia–India relations.
