This paper argues that the September 2012 summit between the EU and South Africa reaffirmed the importance of their relationship, especially in economic terms. However, lingering diplomatic and trade-related obstacles still need to be overcome if a deeper partnership is to evolve. Such a partnership, incidentally, could then pave the way for enhanced cooperation between the EU and the African Union.
