This paper discusses European defense spending patterns in light of the financial crisis in Europe. It argues that the crisis has yielded both negative and positive effects. Yes, it has led to uncoordinated defense cuts at the national level, but it has also revived interest in bilateral and multilateral cooperation. The latter result is a positive one because European countries will soon have to decide whether to pool certain capabilities at the transnational level or lose them because of limited funds.
