The 2006 US National Security Strategy updates the previous security strategy from 2002. The strategy affirms the US policy of preventing political tyranny and strengthening democratic transformation around the world. The strategy seeks to achieve its objectives by championing aspirations for human dignity, strengthening alliances to defeat global terrorism, resolving regional conflicts through multilateral actions, preventing enemies from threatening the United States or allied nations with weapons of mass destruction, igniting an era of global economic growth through free markets and free trade, developing agendas for cooperative action with the other global powers, and transforming the United States' national security institutions to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
