Mar 2011

This report examines Japan-US Security concerns, and stems from a conference held shortly in the wake of and dominated by the March 2011 earthquake/tsunami and resultant nuclear crisis. Dealing with the aftermath meant that government officials from both countries were largely unable to attend the meeting. One of the key takeaways was that Japan will recover from the tragedy, perhaps with more confidence than before, but that the psychological shock to the nation could have a more substantial, long-lasting effect. Other topics covered included Japan’s foreign policy, especially its relations with China, as well as regional security and political leadership. The document also contains a number of conference papers and transcripts of keynote addresses.
