Key findings include: the US-Japan alliance is strong and much improved from a year ago; Japan remains concerned about Chinese military modernization and its anti-access/area denial strategy, especially considering China’s assertiveness in the South China Sea; new fiscal realities in the US and Japan mandate force structure changes in national militaries and the alliance; there is confusion regarding what US extended deterrence can and cannot do; the Fukushima disaster triggered an increased interest in nuclear safety.
