UNASUR is a regional organization formed by twelve South American states. Over the years it has achieved notable successes, for example limiting regional defense expenditures, handling constitutional crises in Ecuador and Paraguay, and settling disputes between Venezuela and Colombia. Despite these successes, however, the organization continues to face various security challenges. This backgrounder details these challenges and UNASUR's possible responses to them.
