In this theory talk, James Ferguson offers an anthropological perspective on the study of IR in general and the status of the state in particular by contrasting the state-centricity of mainstream IR with the anthropological conception that the nation-state is one system of authority and organization among many others. Ferguson further discusses modernity as a category, and challenges critical as well as traditional conceptions surrounding development and Africa, especially as they relate to the effects or nature of structural international power/economic relationships.
