Drawing on diverse traditions including literary theory, sociology and cultural studies, Michael J Shapiro discusses the political philosophy of IR. Employing methods from the critical humanities and social analysis, he proposes the development of a geo-philosophy that is adequate to the micropolitics of urban life and elaborates on the concept of ‘biopower,’ which is based on the premise that power is productive in the sense that it works not just by inhibiting action but by also producing identities.
