This report presents a summary of the findings of a research project on the nature of security and insecurity in Africa.To understand and map the complex nature of the security environment on the continent, eight under-studied security challenges are presented, ranging from issues pertaining to displacement and militancy, small arms and light weapons availability, proliferation, and use; health, disease and human security; as well as food security and conflict, to terrorism and ungoverned spaces; maritime security; and African militaries in the 21st century.
