This brief analyzes Catalonia's separatist aspirations. It argues that the “should we stay or should we go” referendum proposed by the Catalan Prime Minister Artur Mas is misleading, especially since an independent Catalonia would not automatically become a member of the EU. The brief also considers the possibility of a domino effect both in Spain and the EU – i.e., Catalonian secession may indeed form a precedent for other separatist movements and disengagement from the EU.
