This paper provides a brief overview of current developments in Sino-US security relations and on China’s continuing involvement in East and Southeast Asian security issues. It argues that the most fundamental challenge with regards to regional stability is how the roles of China and the US in the Asia Pacific can be reconciled. Currently the Sino-US rivalry is threatening unity within ASEAN, which poses an immediate risk for regional stability.
