This publication discusses international cooperation in renewable energy from a German perspective. Renewable energy is crucial to Germany’s phasing-out of nuclear power and the associated energy transition. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) could play a decisive role in advancing renewables globally, but its true potential has yet to be tapped. While its official founding represented an important achievement for German foreign policy, in year two more concerted efforts are still needed to realize the original vision. Otherwise marginalization looms.
