In July 2012, the foreign ministers of Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden launched an informal reflection process on a ‘European Global Strategy’ (EGS). The purpose is to help define a broader agenda for Europe on the global stage. This paper argues that the EGS initiative is a timely one notwithstanding the economic crisis testing the political resilience of the European Union. It also calls for a progressive global strategy that aims at co-shaping change with other global actors and avoids the conflation of power transitions with power clashes.
