Since the end of the Cold War armed forces of Western nations have increasingly taken on "nontraditional" roles, both internationally and internally. This paper maps the internal roles and uses of the armed forces in 15 Western consolidated democracies. Through this exploratory mapping exercise, key factors and common traits are identified that can help in explaining this apparent shift and in understanding the contexts in which internal roles and tasks are performed.
