China has become one of the Pacific's major donors. This paper examines its aid activities in the Pacific in 2009, drawing on data gathered since 2005. The authors conclude that, at this stage, China appears confident in its aid program and sensitive to analysis of it. In this atmosphere, the success of other countries' efforts to encourage improvements in China's approach is likely to be limited. Nonetheless, the authors believe that some modest efforts are worth pursuing over the long term.
