This commentary discusses the fundamental problems and challenges facing Frontex, the agency for the management of external borders of the EU member states. In particular, it evaluates the establishment of a new fundamental rights officer to improve oversight and accountability of the agency. According to the author, this move will only aggravate the political tensions surrounding the agency’s activities and he calls for a more consensual approach to control Frontex.
