This white paper presents the Lithuanian defense policy of 2006. Since the publication of the last published white paper, two events of enormous historical importance took place for Lithuania: In 2004 Lithuania became a member of NATO and the European Union. The white paper thus outlines the new global security environment, the new role and missions of the Lithuanian armed forces, the main directions of the country's defense policy as well as plans for a defense reform. The emphases of the new agenda of Lithuania's defense policy are put on an active membership in NATO, a participation in the European Security and Defence Policy, modern armed forces, and security cooperation in the Baltic region and beyond.
